Today, we remember James Byrd Jr. He was dragged Today, we remember James Byrd Jr. He was dragged to his death by white supremacists because he was Black. His murder was the catalyst for the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Sadly, laws alone are not enough. While the Trump regime, its Justice Department, and their cronies continue to minimize, ignore, or fail to address hate-fueled violence, we must honor Byrd's memory by pushing our government to fully enforce the laws on the books, accurately track hate crimes, and confront the rising threats facing targeted communities today. Say his name. Demand action.

Todd Blanche is not an independent law enforcement Todd Blanche is not an independent law enforcement official. He is the president's lawyer—using the full resources of the federal government to abuse his power and attack civil rights organizations, fire career prosecutors who tell the truth in court, and protect Trump’s allies.
A new @APNews investigation reveals a devastating A new @APNews investigation reveals a devastating pattern: ICE facilities ignored signs of distress, canceled mental health appointments, and left detainees alone in isolation—in violation of ICE's own standards. These deaths were the result of a detention system operating without adequate care, oversight, or basic regard for human dignity. We demand ICE provide adequate care for every person in custody and hold every facility that fails to provide it accountable.

On the 105th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacr On the 105th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, we remember the victims that never received the justice they deserved. No convictions. No restitution. A thriving Black community burned to the ground, then erased from the history of books for generations. The injustice wasn't only the violence; it was the century of silence that followed, when no one was ever made to pay. Over 100 years later, the pattern is repeating. Black voting power is being decimated through the gutting of the Voting Rights Act. Federal agents terrorize communities and kill without accountability. In 2025 alone, 32 people died in ICE custody, the deadliest year in more than two decades, even as nearly three-quarters of those detained had no criminal conviction. Once again, families are left broken as parents are separated from their children. It's long past time this country acknowledged and atoned for white supremacist violence. We won't forget or stay silent. We the people will continue the fight.
In Troy, New York, 26 AI-powered cameras had been In Troy, New York, 26 AI-powered cameras had been tracking residents' movements without city council approval, public input, or anyone's knowledge. Technology is not innovative if it discriminates against people. Communities like Troy must have a say in whether these tools are deployed, who can access data, and how long data is kept. Systems like these cameras must be tested for bias before they go live. And there must be clear mechanisms for accountability when harm occurs. We’ve laid out exactly what responsible AI looks like. Callais effectively eliminated federal protections Callais effectively eliminated federal protections against discriminatory voting maps. Now, error-prone voter purges are stripping eligible voters from the rolls ahead of November. This is a coordinated assault on the right to vote. States must pass state-level Voting Rights Acts to protect our right to make our voices heard.
Six years ago, George Floyd's murder demanded that Six years ago, George Floyd's murder demanded that the country reckon with public safety and police violence. Today, masked, unaccountable federal agents continue to terrorize communities, silence protesters, and operate without oversight or consequence. We demand Congress hold federal agents accountable, end racial profiling, and invest in the schools, services, and safety that keep communities safe.
Why is SPLC under attack? LCCHR President Maya Wil Why is SPLC under attack? LCCHR President Maya Wiley answers that question — and the truth is impossible to look away from. SPLC is being targeted because it fights to make sure Black voters in states like Alabama and Louisiana can actually vote. Because it challenges the rigged maps — the "packing and cracking" of Black communities designed to dilute their political power and strip away their right to representation. This is not abstract. This is about whether your vote counts. Whether your community gets a fair map. Whether you have any real say in who represents you. This is about people's ability to have voice and power — including the power to dissent and disagree with those in charge. That's exactly why they want @SPLCenter gone. And it's exactly why we have to fight back.
They didn't come for the @SPLCenter because it's d They didn't come for the @SPLCenter because it's dangerous. They came for it because it works. LCCHR President @maya4civilrights testified before the House Judiciary Committee with a truth that every American — every advocate, every voter, every parent — needs to sit with: "SPLC has been targeted by extremists and their supporters for years, not because it is dangerous, but because it is effective. Today, it is SPLC. But in a sense, we are all SPLC." This is not just about one organization. It is about whether civil rights groups can exist and do their work without being dismantled by those in power. If you believe in the right to vote, the right to learn, and the right to live without fear — this is your fight too.

Spread the word

Did you know that millions of Americans can’t access the democratic process because of solvable problems in how elections are run? These problems aren’t felt equally across communities – voters of color are 6x more likely than White voters to wait longer than an hour to vote, even in the same town. Spread the word to help defeat barriers to the ballot box.
