What is a primary election?

A primary election is where parties decide who to nominate as their candidate in the general election, which takes place in November.

Wisconsin is an “open primary” state. This means you choose which one of the party’s primary to vote in, regardless of your own party affiliation.

Any U.S. Citizens, at least 18 years old, who are residents of Wisconsin are eligible to vote as long as they are not currently incarcerated for a felony conviction.

How can I prepare?

You will need an ID to vote in Wisconsin. You can use the following IDs if they show your name and photo:

  • Wisconsin driver’s license, Wisconsin state ID, Military ID, or US Passport.
  • Other forms of acceptable ID include a Veterans Affairs Card (can be unexpired or without expiration date), Wisconsin Tribal ID card (can be unexpired or expired), Certificate of Naturalization (issued within 2 years prior to date of election), or Wisconsin DMV ID Petition Process Photo Receipt.
  • Acceptable Student IDs must be from a university, college, or technical college accredited by Wisconsin and must show your signature, date of issuance, and expiration date and expire within 2 years of the issuance date. If the card is expired, you must also show proof of enrollment (examples: tuition fee receipt, course schedule).

Spread the word

Did you know that millions of Americans can’t access the democratic process because of solvable problems in how elections are run? These problems aren’t felt equally across communities – voters of color are 6x more likely than White voters to wait longer than an hour to vote, even in the same town. Spread the word to help defeat barriers to the ballot box.
